from the roots ...new branches PRE-ORDER
PRE-ORDER NOW: Release date 11th April 2025
In making “…from the roots” we have reached down into our tangled musical roots and used our intuitive musicianship to create our own unique arrangements of this selection of folk songs. We let the music grow and evolve naturally, using improvisation and memory rather than written music, to respond to the aural tradition of folk music.
With flute and guitar, the words of the songs are lost, but we have tried to retain their meaning in the textures and atmospheres of the music, conjuring up the spirit of the words, like the ghost of Molly Malone still selling her cockles and mussels on the streets of Dublin…
Like the best folk music, this record brings together the old and the new, and whilst we began with live takes of flute and guitar, we added overdubs of ourselves to create the widest range of colours to reflect the breadth of feeling, the light and shade, present in all folk music of the British Isles.

Make Merry CD
Setting free their imagination, the Andrews Massey Duo have reinvented the Christmas carol. Their new album, “Make Merry”, brings a fresh take to the festive classics.
Recasting some of the most well-loved Christmas carols and seasonal songs in a variety of guises, “Make Merry” sees David (guitars) and Emily (flutes) touching on country, world music and folk to give you something different for Christmas this year.
They combine their classically-trained craft with improvisation to give an immediate, timeless appeal.
“Make Merry” ranges from the playful and virtuosic renditions of “Deck the Halls” and “Good King Wenceslas” through to the darker “Coventry Carol”.
A thrilling camel ride through “We Three Kings of Orient Are” contrasts with the magical rendition of “Silent Night”, where high guitar harmonics shine out a shimmering starscape above the alto flute’s gentle lullaby.
Following on from their acclaimed debut album “…from the roots”, “Make Merry” is a natural progression for this talented duo.
Stolen Serenades CD
Stolen Serenades contains some of the best loved works of Schubert and Mozart, arranged by Emily and David for their instruments.
Ständchen (or Serenade), was the very first piece we played together in 2009. Originally arranged for flute by Böhm (inventor of the modern flute), David further arranged the piano accompaniment for guitar. This twice-stolen serenade has become one of our most popular concert pieces.
Böhm in fact arranged six of Schubert’s lieder for flute and piano, and during our years of duo partnership David has re-arranged the whole set for flute and guitar: this is the world premiere recording.
The Mozart sonata K.330, this time stolen from the piano, is one of our favourite and most popular classical arrangements. The piano notes divide between flute and guitar almost as if written for them originally.
Schubert’s “Arpeggione” Sonata, rarely heard on the almost forgotten Arpeggione (a kind of bowed guitar), is one of Schubert’s most celebrated chamber works, and is performed by many instrument combinations. We recorded the first movement live in 2010, but it has remained unreleased until now.
CarmenCo CD
CarmenCo is an ensemble comprising Emily Andrews, flautist/mezzo; David Massey & Francisco Correa, guitars. Exploiting the rich textures and varied instrumentation available to us with two guitars and voice or flute, as well as our love of arranging music, we have developed a truly unique programme of Spanish and Spanish-inspired music, centered around but not limited to music from Bizet’s opera Carmen.
The trio performs this repertoire in two contexts: a concert version (also called CarmenCo) which follows closely the story of Bizet’s Carmen; and as the musical element of “Creating Carmen”, a concert/play written by Clare Norburn about Prosper Mérimée, touring in 2019-21 with support from Arts Council England.
