Emily Andrews (flutes, voice) and David Massey (guitars) met in 2009 at the Royal Academy of Music while playing in the orchestra for a musical. They have played together ever since, alongside their solo careers. Emily and David are expanding the boundaries of flute and guitar duo playing. Not ones to be pigeon-holed, their live performances range from classical recitals (Schubert, Mozart, Bach, Dvorak, Elgar, Takemitsu etc) to their own arrangements of British folk music, using loop pedals to overdub harmony parts and layer guitars.
In addition to their performing as a duo, Emily and David are 2/3 of trio CarmenCo, which has been touring its sell-out show "A Pocket Opera" throughout the UK since 2019 and has bookings well into 2026.
As recording artists they have released three CDs so far: “…from the roots”, a collection of their own arrangements of British folk melodies; “make merry”, the duo’s own arrangements of traditional Christmas carols in world music styles; and “Stolen Serenades”, a CD of Schubert and Mozart arranged for flute and guitar, as well as CarmenCo's trio album of Spanish-inspired music as seen in their show A Pocket Opera.
As composers, Emily and David work together to create soundtracks for short films or spoken audio such as podcasts. They use all the instruments available to them (all kinds of flute and whistle, voices, violin, piano, guitars acoustic and electric, banjo and more...) as well as electronics where appropriate to create soundscapes which fit the words or action.
And as arrangers, David arranges almost all of the Duo's classical repertoire, taking music from orchestral and opera worlds as well as arranging many piano parts, and his published arrangements are performed by duos all over the world.
“A classy duo” – Clare Southworth, flute professor at Royal Academy of Music
“Flute and guitar ensemble music at it’s very best“ – Stranraer Free Press
“Andrews and Massey communicate their art with skill and aplomb“ – Howard Duthie, Strathearn Music Society
“a very strong, highly individual ensemble” – Nicholas Boyd-Vaughan, St Martin in the Fields
“The audience […was…] greatly exhilarated by some impeccable chamber music playing.” – British Flute Society review of St James’ Piccadilly Recital
