As well as being busy performers, Emily and David also compose together, creating bespoke soundtracks to go with video or audio clips such as podcasts. They use all the instruments available to them (all kinds of flute and whistle, voices, violin, piano, guitars acoustic and electric, banjo and electronics), to create soundscapes which fit the words or action.

Their eclectic influences and musical interests - all of which feed into their toolkit for composition - include:
- multi-instrumentalists
- classical training
- alternative rock (David writes and records his own alt rock songs which you can listen to here)
- Latin American music interest (Emily plays Brazilian music in choro clubs and performs classical Colombian music with Francisco Correa)
- Improvisation - their composition process relies on improvisation and collaboration, as well as layering instruments and harmonies, rather than written-out music. Indeed, this is how they created their non-classical CDs "from the roots.... new branches" and "make merry".
Most recently they were commissioned to compose soundtracks for Earth Trail by Chris Sunderland. These 6 x 5 minute podcasts about the history of the world and universe from the big bang to humans today - and contemplating our place in the universe - are now installed permanently as an exhibition in Emersons Green Park, on the outskirts of Bristol. Earth Trail creator and author Chris Sunderland says: "Music is a vital partner in this enterprise, bringing the words to life and helping to fuel the imagination, and the Andrews Massey Duo have exhibited extraordinary talent in feeling words and translating them into sound. Although both are classically trained musicians, Emily Andrews and David Massey frequently compose, arrange and perform many kinds of music including folk, world, and rock, and they have used all their wide-reaching influences and experiences in this project to create musical soundscapes for stardust, volcanoes, oceans, dinosaurs, forests, multiplying bacteria, tectonic plates and more."
